Yann Martel
For this last part of the book, I was the discussion director. In the last part of the book Pi finishes his journey and makes it to land. He finds out that his whole family is dead and that he was the only survivor from the entire ship. He is separated from Richard Parker the tiger and is able to get some heath care. I asked my group a few questions about the part we read and this is what they said.
1.What surprised you about this section of the book?
For me I was surprised when we find out that his whole family gets killed. That was a big shock for me. I thought at least the writer would be kind enough that he finds his parents eventually, but no. Rin also said that she was surprised that everyone died except for Pi. Aleksa was surprised that the tiger left Pi all alone in Brazil. He was also surprised when Richard Parker didn't even say good bye. Boris was surprised when someone tried to kill Pi. This part also surprised everyone else in the group too
2.Would you have done the same things Pi did if you were in his situation?
For me it would probably be a yes. I would keep my distance from the tiger, ration out food, try to fish and stay alive. Everyone one else also said yes. Rin said yes because it would help her survive the things Pi had to go through. Aleksa said yes because he would also be scared like Pi. "If I was in Pi's situation I would be very scared, like Pi," he said. And Boris said he would also do it to stay alive and survive until someone found him.
3.How did you feel when he found land and was saved?
For me I felt very happy for him because he was now safe and could try to continue his life. I also felt relieved for Pi. If I had been in his situation, I am sure I would have felt very happy and relieved if I was saved and made it to land. Rin also felt happy for Pi because he was saved and was safe. Aleksa said he really didn't care if Pi had survived or not because he would have been happy anyway. Boris said it was good that he is safe now so he won't be in harm's way or die.
