Discussion Director-The Hobbit

For this times discussion, I was the discussion director. We read the whole book.
Questions:

1. Who are the hobbits and what do they like to do?
The hobbits are the small people with furry toes, and big bellies, they like beer and generally like to be merry. They believe in hanging out and not making too much trouble. Bilbo is one of the hobbits and likes to be with them, and he misses his home which is with the hobbits.

2. What happens when Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves need cross the misty mountains?
When Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves cross the misty mountains, they are taken captive by goblins. Gandalf also kills the the Great Goblin and rescues the dwarves but Bilbo gets separated.

3. When Gandalf is separated from Gandalf and the dwarves, what does Bilbo find and where does he go?
Bilbo walks quietly across the goblin halls to get away from the goblins, and walks right in an underground lake where he finds a ring that that can turn you invisible and is important.

4. Who doe Bilbo encounter in the underground lake?
Biblo encounters a slimy creature named Gollum. Gollum doesn't let Bilbo go and challenges him to a game of riddles. Gollum says that if Bilbo doesn't win he will eat him.

5. Once Bilbo escapes from the underground lake, where does he go through next?
Bilbo meets Gandalf and the dwarves and they go through a forest but Gandalf dosen't go with them.

Illustrator-The Hobbit

This week I was the illustrator. In the image above (you can't really see it but they are in a cave) it shows Bilbo Baggins in a cave with Gollum. He has been separated from the rest of his group and is stuck in the cave. It is very dark and he is trying to grope his way around when he feels something smooth beneath him. He finds that it is a ring. He puts it on and it makes him invisible, but he doesn't know until later. He eventually makes it out of the cave and on a long journey with the wizard Gandalf and some dwarfs.

This is an important part of the story because it develops it. The whole story is centered around Bilbo and the ring that makes him invisible. The ring brings the story together and many of the characters to. Biblo wouldn't have been able to do a number of things if he had not had the ring. The ring is almost like a second protagonist because of how important it is.

Life of Pi-Connector

For this part of the novel my task was the connector. By being the connector I needed to find a action that happened in the book that reminded me of the real world. The one section of the book that we read was basically about Pi saving his life by people rescuing him. In this section of this book there was a happening at the end that reminded me of the movie "Titanic". At the end of the movie "Titanic" the main character also gets saved and leaves without the main supporting character (in this case Richard Parker). The only difference between the two is that Richard Parker left Pi, and in the "Titanic" the girl leaves the supporting character because he passed away during the accident. It also reminded me of this movie, because both of the main characters thought that they are going to pass away, and had no hope of surviving, but eventually people came to save them.

Life of Pi-Discussion Director

Life of Pi
Yann Martel

For this last part of the book, I was the discussion director. In the last part of the book Pi finishes his journey and makes it to land. He finds out that his whole family is dead and that he was the only survivor from the entire ship. He is separated from Richard Parker the tiger and is able to get some heath care. I asked my group a few questions about the part we read and this is what they said.

1.What surprised you about this section of the book?
For me I was surprised when we find out that his whole family gets killed. That was a big shock for me. I thought at least the writer would be kind enough that he finds his parents eventually, but no. Rin also said that she was surprised that everyone died except for Pi. Aleksa was surprised that the tiger left Pi all alone in Brazil. He was also surprised when Richard Parker didn't even say good bye. Boris was surprised when someone tried to kill Pi. This part also surprised everyone else in the group too

2.Would you have done the same things Pi did if you were in his situation?
For me it would probably be a yes. I would keep my distance from the tiger, ration out food, try to fish and stay alive. Everyone one else also said yes. Rin said yes because it would help her survive the things Pi had to go through. Aleksa said yes because he would also be scared like Pi. "If I was in Pi's situation I would be very scared, like Pi," he said. And Boris said he would also do it to stay alive and survive until someone found him.

3.How did you feel when he found land and was saved?
For me I felt very happy for him because he was now safe and could try to continue his life. I also felt relieved for Pi. If I had been in his situation, I am sure I would have felt very happy and relieved if I was saved and made it to land. Rin also felt happy for Pi because he was saved and was safe. Aleksa said he really didn't care if Pi had survived or not because he would have been happy anyway. Boris said it was good that he is safe now so he won't be in harm's way or die.

Summarizer - Life of Pi

Life of Pi

Yann Martel

318/THE END
Throughout the chapters Richard Parker aka RP and Pi work out an uneasy living arrangement. Pi slowly trains RP until he's master of the lifeboat and RP understands it. Pi is often thinking about not coming back alive, although them two seem to do well for a while during the journey. Pi gets used to sharks and brings a larger one on the boat to fight against RP and also a school of flying fish falls on to their boat luckily. Unfortunately a huge storm hits the boat and Pi is forced to go to RP's territory to not drown. He spends the whole day and surprisingly survives but the whole boat is wrecked and most of the food is gone. He gains some cleverness and survival skills but although remembers he lost his parents and is left alone with a man eating tiger. Later on Pi notices an oil tanker but instead of the oil tanker saving them it almost kills them because it didn't see them and passes on without seeing them. Some time later he sees a huge garbage pile and takes out a vine bottle out and puts in a message. After part 2, Pi runs into another castaway who tries to kill him but thankfully RP kills the castaway and saves Pi. Later on they land on an island entirely made out algae and they fully recover and freshen themselves up. They find out that the island is carnivorous and leave as soon as possible. They finally land in Brazil but RP goes to the jungle with hardly saying goodbye. Later on people interview Pi about the shipwreck but more get the story about how he survived, instead of Pi telling the in some way said true story he says the story based on humans. At the end Pi asks which story is better.

For this time I was the vocabulary enricher. In this section of the book I read it was about how Pi finishes his journey and finds out his whole family has passed away. In the end Pi and Richard Parker separates and Pi gets saved. There were some difficult words that were hard to understand.

Life of Pi - Travel Tracer

Life of Pi

Yann Martel

205/318

For this part of the book my task was "Travel Tracer". The task of a " Travel Tracer" is to explain the place where the chosen part of the book " Life of Pi" begins ends and the middle part of the chosen part of the book occurs. This time my group and me decided to read from chapter thirty-seven to chapter seventy-two.

1. Where does chapter thirty-seven begin?
This chapter begins with an opening sentence "the ship sank". In the begging of this chapter Pi does not tell us why or how, but he does inform us that he is on a lifeboat and that it is very windy and cold outside. Pi still does not believe that his parents and Ravi are still not with him and he gets worried.   Richard Parker is with Pi as well, he had  some difficulties coming in to the lifeboat but Pi help his and the tiger came and now sailing with Pi.

2. Where does the middle part from chapter thirty-seven to chapter seventy-two occur?
Pi and his animals are still on the lifeboat, Pi is really scared and he is trying to get some food but not succeeding. At night, Pi is really scared because he hears barking and squealing from the animals that are in the lifeboat with him. One morning when Pi woke and saw that the zebras broken leg was missing, later he found out that the hyena eat the zebras leg.  That night the hyena nearly kills the zebra, but the zebra is barely alive, that night Pi is getting used to the fact that his parents and Ravi might be drowned and dead.

3. Where does the end of chapter seventy-two occur?
Pi is still on the lifeboat and he is describing and explains how to train a tiger.  Pi also begins stage two in training the RP.

Life of Pi-Summarzier (Rin)

Life of Pi
Yann Martel

The job I did this time was Summarizer. The parts that I summarized for this time were from chapter 37 to 72.  In the beginning Pi is on the boat, and he is helping the tiger named Richard Parker who is about to drown on to the boat and when Richard Parker gets on the boat Pi jumps overboard. Afterwards Pi starts to tell how Richard Parker is on the boat. What happens is that the weather starts to become really bad and heavy rain starts to fall. After Pi notices the heavy rain and something is really gone bad, someone throws him overboard on a boat. Once Pi is on the boat a Zebra jumps on the boat and managing to break the bench of the boat but no harm to the actual boat is visible. Pi is fine in the boat with a tiger but noticed that Richard Parker still hasn't eaten the zebra but then sees next to the zebra is hyena. After awhile Pi sees a Orangutan shows up to the boat. The next day Pi sees that the Zebra's broken leg is gone so he knows that hyena ripped the leg off. For the next few days the Zebra starts to die due to the tiger eating him. After the Zebra died the Orangutan and the hyena are having a fight. In the end Orangutan dies. Now it was only Pi and Richard Parker. Pi and Richard Parker starts off having a hard time figuring who sleeps where and Pi is still scared of Richard Parker but the more days it has gone Pi starts to become more or less the master of the boat. When Pi is on the boat he has trouble getting food and surviving.

Life of Pi-Connector

Life of Pi
Yann Martel

I was the connector for this part of the book. In this part of the book, Pi gets stranded at sea in a life boat. In the boat was a tiger, hyena, zebra, and orangutan. The hyena eventually kills and eats the zebra, but it is for nothing when the tiger, Richard Parker, eats the hyena. Pi has to survive on the boat with a vicious tiger and an orangutan. He has to fish to get food and create shelter to live. At first, the sinking of the ship reminded me of the sinking of the Titanic. It left almost everyone dead. The survivors had to escape in life boats, but unlike Pi, were quickly picked up by another boat. When fishing, Pi was not very successful. It was his first time and he was very unfamiliar to the sport. It reminded me of the first time I had tried to fish. I was very unsuccessful, and like Pi I couldn't even catch one fish. It seemed like the fish weren't even interested in me. It was very disappointing, but like Pi I kept trying. Eventually he caught a fish and was later able to catch much more to feed himself and the tiger. Although I had kept trying to catch fish, I was never really able to catch one like Pi.

In my group I asked how they could also connect to this particular part of the book. Rin said that like Pi she also has tried to fish and failed. And Aleksa said he had also went fishing, but like Pi eventually was successful and caught a couple fish. That is the connections we found between the real world and the book.
